French Critics’ Prize for “The Repetition”

On Friday (21.06.) the piece “The Repetition” (“La Reprise”) was awarded the “Prix de la Critique” at the Paris Opéra Comique as “best foreign piece” of the past season. In recent years, the prize has gone to productions by Thomas Ostermeier, Krystian Lupa and Robert Wilson, among others.

“The Repetition”, which premiered in the spring of 2018 and has since been shown on five continents, was selected by the New York Times, De Standaard, Le Temps and Nachtkritik, among others, as one of the best 2018 theatre performances. In September, the production will open the Flemish Theatre Festival as one of the ten most interesting productions of the season – “indispensable”, as the festival jury judged. With “Lam Gods”, “Compassie” and “Orestes in Mosul”, the jury had put all Rau productions of the last year on the longlist.

“Orestes in Mosul”, Milo Rau’s most recent piece, is currently performing in Warsaw and was previously shown in Ghent, Bochum, at the Wiener Festwochen and in Douai. The “megalomaniac and grandiose” (Wiener Zeitung) piece, like all the works of the Swiss director, shared criticism and audience on his previous tour: “breathtaking” (Les Inrockuptibles) or “great theatre art” (taz) for some, “difficult to bear” (New York Times) or even “ambivalent” (Standard) for others.
