Milo Rau wins European Theaterprize

Milo Rau receives the “XV Europe Prize Theatrical Realities” in November in St.Petersburg. This was announced on Twitter by Premio Europa per il Teatro, the institution responsible for the prizes awarded by the EU Commission, as the theatre portal Nachtkritik.de reported. In addition to Rau, the directors Jan Klata and Julien Gosselin will also receive awards, as choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and actor Tiago Rodrigues. Valery Fokin, director of the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and founder and president of the Meyerhold Center in Moscow, will receive the Lifetime Prize. We warmly congratulate all the prize winners!

Whether Milo Rau – who will also open the EASTAP – European Association for the study of theatre and performance as “Artiste Associé” in Paris as well as the HANNAH ARENDT DAYS with the lecture “The Art of Resistance” this autumn – will be able to travel to Russia is questionable, however: since the “Moscow Trials” Rau no longer has an entry permit to Russia. Invitations to the “Golden Mask” festival and the “Manifesta X”, among others, had failed due to visa problems; Rau was also unable to travel to St. Petersburg for a guest performance of the production “Compassion” in 2017.

But before the opening of the EASTAP and the European Theatre Prize there is another festivity on the agenda: the opening of NTGent, which Rau and his team will artistically lead from the 2018/19 season. From 28 to 30 September, Milo Rau will open the traditional Belgian house with the premiere of “The Gent Altarpiece” and Miet Warlop with “Ghostwriter”, while Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula will give the Belgian premiere of his new piece “Not Another Diva”.

The first two volumes (in four languages) of the Ghent theory series “The Golden Books” (Volume 1: Global Realism / Volume 2: The Ghent Altarpiece) will be published for the opening, thus internationalising the collaboration between IIPM and the Berlin Verbrecher Verlag.
